Heading Home

Journey’s End Part 1 – by Lori (Tuesday, September 30th)
I can’t believe how quick this month flew by. After finishing our last dives and Spanish School last week, we had Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to simply relax and enjoy the island. We explored more, and visited with friends. During our last day at Spanish School the teachers prepared a great lunch and recognized each of us with a graduation certificate. Friday night we had our last sign language class with The Mills and Tatiana. Sunday night we were asked to sing at church, so we pulled together “Screen Door” at the last minute and performed during the evening service. We slept about 1 hour Monday night. Nelson (from Church) picked us up in his truck and drove us to the airport. While I was double checking for any left belongings in our third story apartment, the door suddenly blew shut and locked me on the balcony. The rest of the gang was next door at the Mills and so I yelled to them for help. Eventually Pedro (our handyman that fixed the shower for us many times) heard me and came to my rescue! We then piled 7 girls and at least 20 bags in the back of the pickup truck (the mothers got to sit up front!) On the way to the airport we had one of the biggest rain storms since we arrived. We were soaked and muddy by the time we reached the airport. To add to the fun, we had to dodge tree branches…we were all laughing so hard! At the airport, Doris Amanda & Diana Josephina (from church), Tatiana, and Oscar (one of Amanda’s friends), were there to see us off. We waited outside in the rain for two hours trying to avoid mosquitoes. Finally at 7:50 am our flight arrived and by 8:00am we were on our way to San Pedro Sula. After landing, our two families went to Wendy’s to enjoy real fast food! No more PB&J, rice, or pancakes….Yeah!!! We missed the first connecting plane to Miami, so we saw the Mills off and waited……. To be continued…

but still sad to leave.

Wow, I need to catch my breath. The last 36 hours have been a whirlwind. I am sitting in the very back of the last plane of this trip thanking God for letting us get on this plane and praying that our bags will get to the other end. Here's why. After waiting for a couple hours in the airport after seeing the Mills depart, we were happy to hear that we got first class seats on the oversold flight back to the United States. We all jumped with joy at not having to spend another night in San Pedro Sula. The flight was good, until we were supposed to land. I woke up from my nap to the pilot saying “Hey, some of you might have noticed that we are flying in circles. Well you're not crazy, we are in a holding pattern due to weather.” We ended up circling the airport for about 45 minutes. Then just as we were getting ready to land, the plane suddenly pulled up. Another plane had gotten in the way so we had to circle again. Our plane got in about an hour late.
Ok, so we are back in the United States. We were supposed to have 3 hours to easily connect to our final flight to Dallas, but of course nothing is ever easy for the Webers when we travel. Because of the weather, we were already down an hour on our connection time. Then, it took another hour for our bags to make it out. We followed the blue dots, yellow dots, and any other color dots you can think of trying to make it through customs and find where to recheck our bags to Dallas. When we found the right place they said it was to late to check our bags on the connecting flights. We decided to gamble with two of the bags and send them anyway. The others we grabbed and took off running. We were down to half an hour. Then we hit security with some of the previously checked bags. I guess we forgot why we checked them. I was just through when I heard the guy at the monitor say “that’s an awful lot of liquids.” And he wasn’t kidding. The bag we decided not to check was the bag with all our liquids from sunscreen to shampoo to bug spray and everything in between. The security lady was nice and let us keep some of the smaller stuff, but we ended up dumping several dollars worth of stuff in the trash so we could make the plane. But it was still cheaper and better than another night in a hotel.
After security, we had one last hurdle. Approximately a mile dash, in about 15 minutes with 8 bags, before getting to the gate. Who knew Miami airport was so big. Leah ran ahead to the gate to hold the plane and the rest of us caught up with not a moment to spare. We grabbed our tickets and got on, trying to catch our breath. So here we are now. On our way home, hoping the rest of our bags are below us, but still thankful we made it this far. I am ready for a long sleep.

Finally Home!!!
